After a long battle over the state of poker, Ukraine has finally accepted poker as a sport according to the "Ministry of Youth and Sport of Ukraine's" Document 3780, making the anti-gambling legislation not applicable to the game anymore.
Back then, poker was a sport in Ukraine but the Ministry of Sport came to the conclusion that poker was a gambling game like slots and blackjack thus removing the sport status from the game in 2010 under the 2009 law of the Prohibition of Gambling Business in Ukraine act.
In 2013, Ukraine’s Supreme Court sided with the poker clubs, but only for tournament poker. Making cash games illegal.
An other consequence of this law was that this forced major online operators like iPoker to relocate their servers to avoid prosecution in 2016.
Forward to 2018, the Ministry of Sport analyzed changed their decision thanks to Poker players who battled in court against the decision.
This only means good thing for poker in Ukraine. We will have to see what the future will entail for the poker community.
